Varithena Results for Visible Varicose Veins

A vein you can see through the skin is the smallest symptom a trial can photograph and score. That makes it a fair place to start reading results.

This page reads one trial report archived on PubMed Central. It asks what changed for people with visible varicose veins, when it was measured, and what the result leaves open.

What the trial compared

The report is a multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled study of Varithena for symptomatic, visible varicose veins, so treated patients were set against placebo.

PubMed Central's archived report says patients with varicose veins who received Varithena 1% demonstrated significantly greater symptom relief and improvement in visible vein appearance compared with those who received placebo.

Appearance at Week 8

Appearance is where the report gives numbers.

PubMed Central's report says varicose vein appearance improved more with Varithena than with placebo at Week 8, with a PGIC-Appearance score change of 1.9 points versus 0.1 points and an IPR score change of 1.8 points versus 0.1 points (p < 0.0001 for both).

The excerpt used here does not define those two scales. Read the report's own tables before you compare the scores with anything else.

What the authors conclude

The report's conclusions state that Varithena provided significantly greater symptom relief and improvement in leg appearance compared with placebo.

If the word sclerotherapy comes up at your visit, a page on varicose vein treatment with sclerotherapy shows how another publisher uses the term.

What the result does not settle

The sources used here do not say how long the improvement lasts, who was left out of the trial, or how your own veins would respond. A single Week 8 score is a snapshot, not a forecast.

Those are questions for the clinician who examines you, not for a trial summary.

What to write down before you book

Note which veins show, when you first saw them, and whether they ache. Take dated photos so you can describe change instead of guessing at it. Then ask which measure the clinic would use to judge whether treatment worked.

A second page on sclerotherapy gives one more description before the visit. Dated photos give an Oak Lawn-area reader something concrete to show at the visit.
